Trevor Bača
When does music
make us other than we are? Why does harmony slow time? (And why sometimes make
it faster?) Do short musical events make us remember? And what can we know
about durations so long that they make us forget? In this talk composer Trevor
Bača introduces Akasha (2015) for string quartet. Taking as its point of
departure an ancient conception of the brightness of the sky, Akasha
invites the listener to consider these questions, and others like them, that
arise when we think about the ways that time transfigures our world. The
complete piece will be presented in a recording by the JACK Quartet, together
with an overview of the music’s structure and a skeleton key to the primary
materials that appear in the piece. Questions and a short discussion will
follow the presentation.
